Minuteman Press offers free pickup and delivery. One delivery too far... last Friday I stopped on the way home, at a Heald Green address, to make a delivery. The driver made a poor decision (I'm sure his wife used the word 'stupid' some where in her comments) and left his key in the ignition. Only to find, on his return, nothing. No, the van was definitely not where I left it. I rang home to get the registration number. Dialed 999 and reported the van missing. The operator asked which service I required; I wasn't in the mood for jokes! Anyway, having asked for police, they issued a reference number and promised to ring back. Hey! The number of times I get told that during my working week. Well, within ten minutes someone had left a message on my phone... I had been too slow getting the phone out of my pocket. Unfortunately, it then took 20 minutes to get through to the police number, but at least I didn't have to endure sales messages or having to restart the process every few minutes. I left more details and was given the vital crime reference number by another friendly and helpful officer. I started to have my tea and planned my next course of action... probably paying a visit to the local estate for a search. Even before I had finished my tea I had had another phone message that a 'team' had located the van in said estate and were waiting for me. Jumped in car and met the patrol. Dressed in civvies it was difficult, at first, to identify them. Once again, more help was offered. We worked out what to do next, a shake of hands and off they drove into the freezing January night.
Thanks, once again, to Greater Manchester Police. Van stolen and returned in a space of a couple of hours.
